[Inx] Testing Buildinx for inx-1.0

Hello all,

Something to do in your Copious Free Time (tm)...

The 'buildinx' script for building INX has had some updates, partly
because we now have a couple of packages on the Launchpad PPA archive at

So, if you want a sneak preview of inx-1.0, you can try building it
yourself. (This will also help to test the build script, which will of
course be offered for general download).

It's not difficult, honestly ;) If you run Ubuntu, just follow this:

How to Build INX:

You need the latest 'buildinx' script. The easiest way to get it and
use it is as follows:

wget http://inx.maincontent.net/buildinx/buildinx

Or just do a "save as" from your browser.

Now you run it like this: (note that the BuildInxWorkingDirectory that
it creates will be owned by root, so if you later want to delete it, you
will need 'sudo', or to be root).

Use a biggish terminal size - maximising it is easiest.

chmod +x buildinx
sudo ./buildinx 1.0 archive.ubuntu.com

What will happen:

1) The script will check that you have the needed tools, and install
them with apt-get if not. The script has only been tested on Ubuntu, by
the way.
2) Buildinx will download and create a chroot using the 'debootstrap'
3) Buildinx will update the apt sources, and grab all the needed
packages. Because we can't (yet) sign PPA packages, you will be asked
if you want to go ahead with them. You probably want to say yes ;)
4) You will be asked about choosing a language. Scroll down and choose
'en' - I have no idea if other choices would work, but please do this,
since otherwise you won't be testing "INX 1.0" but a custom version :)
5) You will eventually see a menu that offers a few possibilities.
Choose '1: Let the script complete a clone of INX for you.'
6) Now you will see buildinx making the iso, including the squashfs
file system. On completion, if you are running GNOME or KDE, you will
be offered the option to burn the inx-1.0.iso

That's about it... you can read the "man" page for "buildinx" here:

It's not a very long or difficult man page.

Reports on success, failure, bugs etc. to
inx at lists.inx.maincontent.net and/or
inx-devel at lists.launchpad.net

In other words, just "reply to list".

I thought people might find this an interesting way to contribute
feedback :) The script downloads about 200 MB, and the build directory
uses around 865 MB of space once the iso is built.
